The simple form of cross stitch, seen in the diagram below, is recommended for all Elizabeth Bradley kits and woolwork. It is an easy stich to work and creates thick square pieces of needlework with no distortion in shape - this makes it unecessary to use a frame when working, unless you prefer to do so.

The pattern looks very distinctive when worked with this stitch because each cross makes a complete square rather than half of one as with half cross stitch or tent stitch. This particular form of cross stitch was found originally on many Victorian pieces of Berlin woolwork; it creates work that is both tough and hardwearing and so many of the pieces made with it have lasted well over 100 years with very little sign of wear.

19th Century woolwork was mainly worked on double threaded canvas. Now an equally flat, modern and easy to use alternative is available - it is known as interlock canvas. On this type of canvas each twisted thread of the warp actually runs through those of the weft where they meet or interlock and the result is a firm but flexible mesh in which the threads are fixed in place.

On such a canvas it is easy to produce smooth and even work as long as a relatively loose and constant tension is maintained. Interlock canvas does not fray around the cut edges and is easier and more pleasant to use than mono canvas.
