This design was launched as a fabric, in cotton chintz, in 1876 and Morris intended to produce it using his newly discovered indigo dyeing method. This was done by Thomas Wardle with block printing in natural Pryssian blue dye.

This interpretation for needlepoint recaptures the faded look of Morris's preliminary watercolour sketch which is in the collection of the William Morris Gallery at Walthamstow.
