This sampler bears a striking resemblance to a number of pieces worked at the Quaker Westtown School in Chester County, Pennsylvania, in the early nineteenth century. Both the central "Emblem of Innocence" with the paired birds, and the large rose motifs to the left and right of it, are nearly identical to other examples actually marked as having been made at the Westtown School. Other distinctively Quaker needlework design motifs include the gliding swan, bird in branch, floral and fruit sprigs, and half geometric medallions.

Stitches used in the sampler are cross, satin and Queen.
