Mary Stringer Sampler circa 1815
Mary Stringer Sampler circa 1815

The novel configuration of alphabets, numerals, and ligatures across the top third of this sampler make it an interesting and attractive needlework exercise. The blocks of letter combinations are similar to those on Quaker samplers, there called the rule to mark napkins, but here are simply groups of alphabetical sequence, rather than initials and numerals. The ligatures at the center are found on Quaker samplers as well, often in sequence with alphabets. While probably not a student at a Quaker school, Mary, or her teacher, might have been influenced by the designs produced there. The Scarlet Letter is unsure if the original sampler is English or American.
