Bouquet of Flowers in a Vase by Ambrosius Bosschaert
Bouquet of Flowers in a Vase by Ambrosius Bosschaert

Cross stitch chart or kit from the Scarlet Quince Classic Still Lifes Fine Art Collection.

Ambrosius Bosschaert the Elder (Antwerp, January 18, 1573 – The Hague, 1621) was a still life painter of the Dutch Golden Age.

He started his career in Antwerp, but spent most of it in Middelburg (1593–1613), where he became dean of the painters' guild. He later worked in Amsterdam (1614), Bergen op Zoom (1615–1616), Utrecht (1616–1619), and Breda (1619). He specialised in painting still lifes with flowers. In 1587, Ambrosius Bosschaert moved from Antwerp to Middelburg with his family because of the threat of religious persecution. At the age of twenty-one, he joined the city’s Guild of Saint Luke. Not long after, Bosschaert had established himself as a leading figure in the fashionable floral painting genre.

A spectacular arrangement of flowers in a beaded glass vase standing in a small corner alcove. One yellow rose lies beside the vase, and perched on it is a red, black, and white butterfly. Also beside the vase is a housefly and two black-and-white seashells. The flowers in the vase include tulips in yellow, variegated red and white and red and yellow, blue iris, yellow-and-orange marigolds, columbine in blue and white, frittillaries, forget-me-nots, lilies of the valley, pink and white roses, narcissus, anemones, hyacinths, and others. Another butterfly and caterpiller are tucked into the bouquet. (1618)

Approx: 20" x 28" or 51 x 71cm - when worked on 18ct.
