Janet Carsels 1787 Sampler
A reproduction historical sampler kit from the Scarlet Letter Collection. Choose to stitch in cotton or silk.
This sampler was made in Scotland and includes many of the traditional motifs associated with samplermaking in this region. Firstly, Janet has included many initials of family members. However the initials at the center- G R 3 -refer to the then-reigning monarch, King George III. The flowering trees, little black dogs, evergreen trees, crowns, illuminated letters and a colour scheme that is primarily red and green are all characteristic of Scottish samplers.
Stitches used in the sampler are cross, double running, back and eyelet.
On 35 count linen it will measure approximately 15-1/2" x 14-3/4" when completed, very close to the size of the original.
