Isabel Redie 1816 Sampler

An historical design from the Scarlet Letter collection.

From the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, England. The quintessential Scottish sampler, displaying all the characteristics common to this group of samplers, including the arcaded pansy and carnation bands, illuminated alphabets, the arms of Scotland and the Linlithgow family, and the mystery mansion.

The verse is from an old hymn:

Awake my soul and with the sun
Thy daily stage of duty run
Shake of(f) dull sloth and early rise
To pay the morning sacrifice

The leopard is an heraldic motif signifying strength.
