Stumpwork is also known as raised work - some of the design is raised and "sticks out" of the design, making the design very 3D due to the raised and padded embroidery.

The raised effect is produced by creating separate, wired leaves/petals etc and applying them onto the main piece. The padding is achieved by applying layers of felt and embroidering over them.

This technique makes use of a variety of stitches to interpret designs in three dimensions, with realistic effects.

In 17th and 18th century Europe it was used for pictures and small bags and to cover wooden boxes and mirror frames. Traditional subjects include garden scenes with plants, birds, animals and fountains and also human figures in elaborate costumes. The results are stunning!
