Cocktail by Gerald Murphy

Cross stitch chart or counted cross stitch kit from the Scarlet Quince 20th & 21st Century Fine Art Collection.

Gerald Clery Murphy (March 25, 1888 – October 17, 1964) born in Boston to the family that owned the Mark Cross Company, sellers of fine leather goods.

Gerald only painted from 1921 until 1929; he is known for his hard-edged still life paintings in a Precisionist, Cubist style. During the 1920s Gerald Murphy, along with other American modernist painters in Europe, notably Charles Demuth and Stuart Davis created paintings prefiguring the pop art movement that contained pop culture imagery such as mundane objects culled from American commercial products and advertising design.

In this piece is of a still life of a cocktail glass, box of Cuban cigars with tax stamp, cocktail shaker, corkscrew, and lime arranged with abstract shapes in a flattened space. The cigar box label shows a female figure pointing to Cuba on a globe amid a plethora of other allegorical objects. (1927)

Approx: 19" x 19" or 48 x 49cm - when worked on 18ct or 36ct.
