Dutch Sampler by GSD 1684

An historical design from The Scarlet Letter Sampler Collection.

A Northern Dutch Sampler from the German Sampler Museum.

This northern Dutch sampler is another letterndoek- alphabet sampler- with lovely illuminated letters typical of samplers made in this region. The needleworker has flanked two stylised trees of life with her initials. Other symbols include a crowned heart (Christ's love) and an eight-pointed star (the Star of Bethlehem). Amongst all this are various practice stitches and motifs, in no particular order, since a piece such as this was not meant for display, but as a stitching exercise and pattern record.

Stitches used are cross, double running, counted satin, eyelet, and back.

Origin and date: Northern Holland, 1684

Linen count/finished size: 35 count, 9"x28". Kit contains fabric, silk or cotton thread, needle and instructions.
